The Old Sihlpapierfabrik is a contemporary witness to the industrial era and the subsequent occupation by artists. The historical eras can be seen and felt in the striking architecture, wall paintings and window pictures form the foundation for today's use.
Where the Papiersaal and Folium are located today, paper was processed by hand back then (from 1886 to 1976). By using cutting machines, the desired formats were created, which were then manually sorted, counted and provided with lines or watermarks. On the ground floor, where the Rüsterei restaurant is now located, there were once large gluing, air conditioning and calendering machines that processed the paper so that it could be transported on rolls. After the paper machines were decommissioned, the finishing shop remained in operation until 1990.
From 1995 the building was converted and rented to external parties. The last official tenant was an artist. The building was then taken over by artists, free thinkers and Dadaists and converted into a Dada and art house with theater, performance art, parties and its own coffee house.
In the middle of the modern Sihlcity development (Urban Entertainment Center), the Papiersaal was put into operation by Prägebüro GmbH in 2007 and Folium with its current operation in 2012.
